ABV is an abbreviated term for alcohol by volume which is a standard measure of how much alcohol is in an alcoholic beverage, usually displayed as a percentage. Drinks such as beer, cider and alcopops tends to be lower in ABV, while spirits such as vodka, rum and gin tend to have a higher ABV. In the United States alcohol proof is sometimes used, which is twice the ABV number.
