Brandy Glass

Glossary of Terms

A brandy glass is also known as a brandy snifter or a balloon glass. Made from glass, it features a short stem and rounded wide bowl with a narrow rim. A tulip shaped glass might also be used, while in some parts of the world it is served in a tumbler on the rocks. A brandy glass is most commonly used to serve brandy and cognac but may also be used for whiskey and liqueurs. The short stem and rounded bottom bowl of the brandy glass is designed to be cupped in the hand to gently swirl and warm the spirit. This releases the aromatic bouquet of the brandy, which is trapped within the glass by the narrow top. Another form of warming brandy is to use a brandy warmer, which is a stand for a brandy glass with a tea light below.
