Strain

Glossary of Terms

To strain, or straining, is a process of serving mixed drinks such as cocktails. Drinks that have been shaken or stirred with ice usually require straining into the glass, as this catches the melted ice cubes and any large chunks of fruit or pulp for a smooth drink. A cocktail may be strained into the glass using a cobbler cocktail shaker, which has an in-built strainer in the lid or through a specialist bar tool called a strainer if using a Boston shaker tin or mixing glass. A heavy fruit based drink may require the bartender to double strain to remove all the fruit chunks.
